Cosmos Fans Fight Food Insecurity in Coney Island

Cosmos supporters’ commitment to Coney Island reaches beyond the walls of MCU Park, where their club competes.

This year, Cosmos supporters raised about $1000 for the Coney Island Lighthouse Mission, the largest emergency food provider in Coney Island. CILM distributes free grocery bags twice a week and serves hot meals to Coney Islanders every Wednesday and Friday evenings.  2018 marked the third straight year that Cosmos fans partnered with CILM.

“More than cheering on professional athletes playing a game, addressing the issue of poverty in NYC is one of the core missions of Cosmos supporters,” said Cosmos supporter and community leader Nicholas Alexandrakos “One of the major difficulties that often accompanies poverty is hunger … The CILM plays a huge part in making sure that families affected by poverty, especially those with children, can receive the food that they need. “

Like NYC-based fans of FC St. Pauli, Cosmos supporters have channeled their energy to support various community initiatives.

In November, Cosmos supporters also volunteered at the CILM’s “Turkey Distribution Night,” where they handed out clothing, and food to local residents. The club also secured a commitment from the Mets to work with CILM. The Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ Single A affiliate, play at Coney Island’s MCU Park, too.

In addition to fighting food insecurity, Cosmos supporters sponsored two local artists, the Turtle Caps, to paint a mural outside the CILM headquarters on Mermaid Avenue.
